Election Day, 2006
Today is the big day. November 7, 2006! During the lead-up to this election, we as Americans, have been bombarded with political ads saying this, that, and the other about the different candidates, most of which is either untrue, or a distortion of the truth for the purposes of making a particular candidate look better by comparison. Most of us are savvy enough to look past this junk, and do a little research ourselves, what is what I have been doing on and off all day today. My main concern was the race between Bob Inglis and John Cobin.
I’m a proud libertarian. I make no bones about that. I find it hard to vote for social conservatives when the religious discrimination in their policies is so incredibly obvious. I also wouldn’t be caught dead voting democrat, since their spending and social programs will lead us to bankruptcy in no time, not to mention they’re even worse with respect to religious discrimination. I’m not easy to represent, because of my differing positions on issues such as:
I am pro-gay marriage, at least in the sense that I believe that marriage is a religious institution, not a government sanctioned one, therefore I believe the government should recognize a “partnership” between any 2 human beings for purposes of taxes, inheritance, etc. However, the government defining marriage is ridiculous to me.
I’m also not 100% pro-life. Again, there is a context, so hear me out. I believe that the government has no right to force someone to give their life for another. If a mother’s life is in danger from the pregnancy, I believe that everything should be done to save the life of the baby, however, if such were not possible, I do not believe that she should be forced to give her life for the unborn child (and I do believe it is a child, not a “fetus”). However, even in cases of rape and incest, if that mother’s life is not in any danger, the government has the duty to protect that child.
I am deeply concerned with national security. I am pro-Patriot Act. I am pro-Military. I am for the war in Iraq. I also support our membership in, and support of, the United Nations.
So, I am forced to decide which candidates best represent me. This is no easy task. However, there are rules. In this country, the rules are simple: you want to get something done in politics? then you either have to be a Republican or a democrat. Simple as that. Third parties rarely win, and their ideology is usually so radical that they tend to not play nicely with others, which is a requirement to get things done in government. Obviously there are exceptions, but they’re not the norm.
A prime example of this is our Governor, Mark Sanford. Sanford is a conservative libertarian in his policy, yet he ran as a Republican. Since he has taken office, he has been one of the best Governors in the history of our state, in my opinion. He has had the guts to stand up to the state legislative body against bloated spending. He is a fervent advocate of school vouchers, which is a step toward privatizing a portion of primary/secondary education, therefore building a strong infrastructure for private schools, which will help ease the burden on our public schools. He has eliminated unneeded programs, and saved the SC taxpayer hundreds, and he’s not done yet.
Mark Sanford plays by the rules, and he gets things done. Bottom line. Unfortunately for Dr. Cobin, he did not play by the rules, so today, I’ll be casting my vote for Bob Inglis. He may not represent me perfectly, but he has a much greater chance of being an agent of change than Dr. Cobin ever could. Please, Mr. Inglis, don’t disappoint, don’t disappoint.
