I was robbed yesterday

No, there’s no pun here. My apartment was broken into and I was robbed.

But, I’m trying to be upbeat about it. After all, it is just stuff. However, it was really expensive stuff, so it’s hard not to be a little bummed about it. Here’s a list of the things taken:

  1. 2 year old widescreen Gateway Laptop
  2. Motorola Q smart phone (I just got this thing!)
  3. Canon SD600 Digital Camera (a Christmas present) including 2gb SD card
  4. Linksys Wireless Router
  5. Guitar amp (rarely used)
  6. a 512mb miniSD card
  7. A .22 caliber revolver
  8. a Nike duffle bag (evidently stuffed with all my expensive gadgets)

Oh, and 1 broken door.

Does it suck to get your stuff stolen? Sure! I’m not sure what I’m going to do since I’m not insured for this stuff.

The only plus side is, just the other day, my laptop’s “up arrow” on the keyboard came off, so at least whoever stole it is missing an up arrow. Also, I was thinking about replacing it anyway with a new MacBook. I guess I don’t have a choice now :-(

Anyway, if you’re a praying individual, I’d appreciate it if you remembered me as I struggle to replace all this stuff. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I will be moving soon. I will not stay where I don’t feel safe. Pray for that as well.

Man, I feel for you. I’ve been there. Its strange how being a crime victim stays with you forever. Even after you replace your stuff, you still think about it.

Twenty years ago, someone broke into my office (I was on a church staff back then), and stole a bunch of my stuff. The most hurtful thing they stole was my trumpet. It was hand made in Chicago. My mom bought it for me, and it got me a college scholarship, as well as a lot of other great memories. I still miss that thing.
My car got stolen from a parking lot once. That really sucked. And this year, some morons broke into my mother’s house, beat up her dog, and stole a bunch of her stuff.
You can move all you want, but you will always be susceptible to crime. Best advice, trust in the Lord. And pray that your Motorola blows up in their pocket and messes up their genetalia.
Big question: Are you insured?

Jason,

I know what you mean. I’m sitting here at work fearing that they’ll come back for my TV, 2 desktop computers with monitors, dvd player, guitar, etc. Hopefully they’ll put a door on the front that’s not so easily kicked in.

The reason I’m moving is because I currently live in a bad neighborhood. It was a good deal for the apartment. I’m now realizing that “good deals” come with an unseen price tag. I don’t mind scratching around more for a better place now.

I know it’s not really noble of me, but I have been wishing ill will on my thief. I guess a more godly person would say something like “well, they probably needed the money. I wish them well”. NOT ME! I’m gonna need some serious forgiveness for the stuff I’ve been wishing on that dude for the last 12 hours :-) Genitalia mutilation would do just fine :-D I’d be happy with that.

That so totally stinks, Nathan. I’ll keep you in my prayers…hope you find a new apartment soon!! & don’t forget to send me your new address when you do (gotta keep up the class records…LOL!).

Oh, & don’t feel too bad about wishing bad on the guys who did it…it’s really hard not to. Here’s an interesting question for you that sort of goes along with that topic: if we are not forgiven by God until we ask for it (i.e. - accept salvation), must we “forgive” others until they ask for it?! hmm… My dad asked me that one day, & i’m still working on the answer. What do you think?

You’re good, Nathan. I wouldn’t worry about your thoughts toward the perp. Fact is, he will get his. You live by the sword, and you die by the sword. He stole your .22, and if he tries to use it in the commission of a crime, he’ll likely either shoot himself, or get shot. Or he’ll walk into the wrong house, and get cut down by some old guy with a single shot .410, and a bad disposition.
Can you get an alarm system for an apartment? When my mom was broken into, we got her an alarm system. Funny thing is, my dad owned and operated a security company for years, and he always said that the deterrent is not the alarm, but the sign in the yard, or the sticker on the door. If there are ten houses on a block, and six of them have signs indicating they have a monitored system, they perp will go to the houses without the system. Unless you have something specific that they want, they will always go for the easy target.
Get some stickers for your new pad. And buy a .410.

Man, I can’t even imagine how much this must suck. I agree with jasonk: you have every right to be angry. This guy will get his, maybe not this week, maybe not this year, but he will. And not because of karma or God or anything; just because, as Jason said- you live by the sword, you die by the sword.
I don’t really know what I can say to make you feel better, but you have my sincere condolences. I don’t know how, but I hope that somehow along the road this will turn out to have been for the best.

Thanks George, and everyone who expressed sympathy. I do appreciate it.

It does suck to have your space violated. You feel like the one place you thought was “yours” was quickly snatched from you. Like I said earlier, I’m going to move to a safer place next week. More expensive, yes. But I’m willing to pay more for more peace of mind.

I’m doing fine. No, I can’t get my stuff back, and I can’t have it paid for, but I worked hard for it to begin with, and I’ll work hard to replace it. Luckily, they were all luxuries (other than the phone, which I DID have insurance on) and not necessities.

The only thing I really hate is that my camera was taken. Not only was it a Christmas present from the people I love the most, but it also had some pictures on the card that I would have really liked to save. Oh, well. That’ll teach me to take more pictures more often. Memories are precious.

It will definitely turn out for the best. I’m sure of it, although not sure how.
