Free Computer Tools
Dealing with computers all day, especially web stuff, can require a number of tools some of which are pricey! I thought I’d share a couple of free alternatives to some of those everyday tools that we all need sometimes to function.
Filzip - free zip utility
I’ve been using Filzip for over a year now, and I install it on every computer I work on. I personally hate the zip reader built in to Windows XP, and many of the other zip programs require a registration or payment of some kind. Although Filzip doesn’t deal with .rar files or all those other archive files, it opens and creates zip files in a flash! And of course, it’s free.
CutePDF - PDF creation
I’ve also been using CutePDF for a few years now. It prints perfect PDF files (works great for the internet) with no watermark. I’m sure it doesn’t have the flexibility of the Adobe PDF printer (Acrobat), but hey, if all you need to do is print off some Word/Excel documents to a PDF, this is perfect for you. Don’t forget to download and install Ghostscript too or this program will be useless.
Enjoy!

I like 7zip, it’s also free, open-source, cross-platform, and supports zips, rars, gzips, tars, cabs, isos, its own high-compression-ratio format, and a host of other more obscure formats. Unfortunately it doesn’t pack rars.
OpenOffice also has a decent PDF export ability. I don’t even use MS Office anymore, I just use OOo.
