Great Article on Church Marketing
Ryan (the winner of our Feed Contest a while back) had a great article a few weeks abo on church marketing, and I thought I’d share some of his insights from that article with my readers.
In case you haven’t been able to tell, I’m a big fan of brainstorming sessions with members of the church. I think that organizing a group of people together into one room, casing a vision to them, and asking them to provide feedback on how to most effectively accomplish that vision, is a fantastic way to both solidify your members for a common goal, and effectively see that goal come to pass. It seems that Ryan does as well, as evidenced by his fantastic advice,
First, brainstorm (with whomever is necessary) where the word should get out for said event. Ask the following questions:
- Who do we want to see our marketing? Members or non members?
- Where do we want them to see our marketing?
- How do we want them to respond to our marketing?
- What media forms are available for us? Also: What media forms could be available to us?
Of course, this all assumes you WANT to see people come to your church, and you find it Biblicly acceptable to do what you can to see that happen. These are all great questions to ask your team. Ryan and his team concluded that his church wanted to market to people on the following levels:
- Announcement slides in church during and between services.
- An email.
- A mailer, 1/4 or 1/2 sheet (either full church, partial church, or mass).
- A page and banner on the website.
- A poster for members to use to promote the event themselves.
- A 1/4 sheet invite card for members to hand out to a friend.
By the way, all the previous methods are great strategies for marketing.
Ryan has even more specific tips at the original article, so be sure to head over there and check them out.

The best so-called “marketing” in the world…
“Silent Witness”
Walk the talk, and others will see God in you, and will notice that you have something they don’t, which will lead to the question… “WoW! You sure are a happy person, you always seem upbeat! What is your secret?”
And it is something that EVERYONE can do, and it doesn’t cost the church a penny out of its “advertising budget”…
Holding “bible studies” at home, invite folks, and posting those ads in local papers is a good way to draw folks in as well. The “informality” of a local small group gathering is another way…
If you are a married couple w/kids… Hold a VBS (Vacation Bible Study) at your home during school breaks. The unsaved love to drop their kids off for a week of “free babysitting” at a VBS (Trust me, this one is a biggie!) And you get the chance to invite the children to Sunday School, (which is more time off for the parents) which in turn could spark interest in the parents when the kids tell them what a wonderful time they had, and ask Mom & Dad to go with them next Sunday.
