My First Time in the Air
I’m currently in the air, laptop open, listening to a podcast, and admiring the fantastic view from my window seat. I’ve actually never flown before, and I have to say that it is AWESOME!
As we were taking off, I had the biggest, goofiest smile on my face. I looked like a major nerd, but I didn’t care. It was simply amazing to elevate up through the clouds. It really felt like I could have reached out and grabbed a handful of cloud. I just kept saying under my breath, “this is unreal!”
I have to say, I really like flying! Here’s some quick observations:
- Being short is good on an airplane. I had plenty of room
- I really hate pretzels, but I can’t stop eating them.
- From the sky, neighborhoods look like a game of Monopoly.
- Florida has way too many lakes, and I think everybody here has their own personal pond in the back yard.
- I loved having no one in the seat beside me.
- Airplanes accelerate REALLY fast. I thought my little sports car in high school was quick!
- Flying above the clouds is cool, but flying close to the ground is cooler. The best part was the ascent though. I felt like Superman.
- Speaking of, I really want to fly like Superman. If I could have one wish, that would be it I think.
- Planes are smoother than buses. That kinda shocked me.
- I spent $200 for a round-trip ticket. I would have spent $300-$400 in gas, plus mileage on my car, to get here if I drove. Flying is fun, and cost-effective.
- I definitely should fly more.

The 7 year old kid sitting in front of me is getting restless, and the banging on the back of his chair stopped being funny about 15 minutes ago. Seriously.

I love your updates–I can almost picture the goofy little kid-like smile
Hope you didn’t yell out a big “wheeeeee” when you accelerated!
As an experienced (sometimes weary) traveler, it’s wonderful to hear of the excitement that comes with a first flight. Takes me back. Thanks. Safe travels.
Only in my head
You need to try flying in a single-engine plane. Airliners are exciting enough, but there’s nothing quite like being in a tiny little plane.
Of course, maybe airliners are more fun when you don’t go on a budget line like ValuJet?
Taking off is the funnest part of flying and landing is the scariest. Every time I fly, I’m amazed at how fast the plane hits the runway and how quickly it can slow down.
I won’t tell you about my Dad’s recent flight to Columbia where the landing gear malfunctioned…
