Weekend Reflections

I had a pretty darn good weekend. I hit some pretty sweet churches, and I’m just soaking in all the good things about each one. If you have some free time, and the willingness to go to bunches of churches, you really can learn a lot. Anyway, here are my thoughts:

Springwell Church – 9:00am

I’ve been there once before, and I decided to give it another go-around. Totally worth it! The first time I visited, the pastor was out of town, and someone else preached. That isn’t to say it wasn’t good … it was good! I really enjoyed the service yesterday though. They’re doing a sermon series called “Welcome to the Fabulous Glory Days”. I’m not sure what the other sermons in the series were like, but the theme of yesterday’s service was incredibly evident. The glory days aren’t what you think they were. I might write more on this later this week if I can find the time to put it all down.

Marathon Church – 11:30am

Again, I’ve visited Marathon before about a year and a half ago. I’ve mentioned before that I still remember the service because it was themed appropriately. Yesterday was no different. Think about how easy it would be to forget a service called “The Fruits of the Spirit”. For those of us who have been Christians all our lives, that can be kind of bland and easy to forget. So, when Marathon decided to do a sermon on the Fruits of the Spirit, the made sure I’d never forget. And I won’t. The sermon series is called “Juicy Fruit” … yeah, like the gum :-) Great message by the way as well. Eddie Cox has gotten better at his delivery since the last time I saw him speak. And the band was freakin’ awesome. There is seriously a TON of raw talent on that stage.

NewSpring Church – 4:15pm

OK, it should be obvious now that I try to NEVER miss a service at NewSpring. If you want to see some great worship music, you should check out the video. The new song we sang was awesome! I’m not much of a hand-raiser … I just sing. And if you see my lips moving, mark it down … I’m talking to God. NewSpring’s services definitely help me worship … and I assume that’s the goal. Mission accomplished guys! Oh and the message, if anyone wants to try to lump NewSpring in with the “health and wealth”, or “prosperity” churches or say they only focus on the positive side of Jesus, try again. He dispelled 3 myths about Jesus, and he brought it! You’ll have to watch the video to see the points, but it’s worth the time. Let’s just say that you didn’t walk away from that service feeling all “Lakewoody:-)

All in all, it was a terrific day. I feel re-energized and can’t wait for next weekend!

Just curious … why so many different congregations? Are you seeking out one with which to associate and labor? If so, what kinds of things are you looking for? If not, what are you doing?

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. I’m looking for a new church, and so I’m trying to take in everything I can while trying to make decisions.

On top of that, if the church I end up joining has identical services, I’ll probably continue to visit other churches in the area every once in a while, just to learn … both spiritually and methodically. I just love soaking it all in. So many things that you can take away and learn from.

Hey man!

I love what you’re doing! This kind of diversity adds so much value to your blogging!

Yesterday was my first day as a man without a church! We went, worshiped, and learned at The Fathers House in Rochester, NY. It was a good experience.
