I know what you mean – there’s nothing more enjoyable than studying math/physics to some good music… I find myself oscillating between dramatic orchestrative pieces and hardcore metal. Nothing like abstract algebra to a little Tanya Tsarouska or Haste the Day!

If you guys like metal, you should try some of the bands I listen to. Most of them are groups that aren’t very well known in the US. This is my favorite band, Blind Guardian (their site is down, so I’m just temporarily uploading one song to my server- don’t tell their record company)-

I’ll make one distinction … I’m not a death metal fan. I don’t necessarily enjoy the loudest/fastest/hardest metal. I’m not sure if that’s what you posted, George … I’ll try it later today and see what I think :-)

George,

Maybe we could get along after all… ;)

OK George, I have to hand it to you … other than the vocalist which I didn’t particularly prefer, that some darn good music.

I would have liked a slightly deeper base melody, but the dual guitar speed solos were pretty sweet. Those aren’t your average garage band guitarists.

Good stuff!

Hansi’s voice seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing. He’s one of my favorite singers, but some people just don’t like his voice.

I’m not much of a death metal fan either. I’ll listen to some of the more prog-style death bands, like Amorphis or Opeth, but that’s about it. I don’t listen to much thrash, either (most of the thrash I do listen to is 80s stuff, especially technical thrash groups like Watchtower), and I stick away from black metal entirely. My preferred genres are progressive and power metal, so anything I would recommend to you probably wouldn’t be too harsh.

A list of bands worth checking out:

Blind Guardian, of course

Sieges Even (their earlier stuff is technical thrash in the vein of Symphony X or Watchtower, their later, and much better music, is not really metal at all, but a unique style of prog rock)

Pain of Salvation (a socially-conscious prog metal band with a lot of influence from 70s and 80s prog rock bands such as Pink Floyd, they make heavy use of time changes and weird rhythms)

Ayreon (this band does rock operas, for each album they bring together a new group made up of the greatest singers in metal, also heavily influenced by 60s and 70s prog rock)

JT Bruce (an independent artist who mixes instrumental metal, prog rock, and electronica)

Thy Majestie (epic power metal with prog metal influence, they sing about historical themes)
