Group Dynamics
I just got back from attending Grouplink, NewSpring’s way of connecting members of the church with other members of the church to meet together and study the Bible.
I was challenged tonight as to the importance of this particular part of the church.
I’ve had people tell me that NewSpring is just too big for them to feel comfortable in, and in a sense I can understand how that would be a frustrating thing to get past. How can the church perform roles such as accountability and discipline if you are just a number in a seat? At the same time, churches can’t simply say “OK, that’s enough growth … we’re just getting too big, so let’s start turning people away.” Most large (and some small) churches have realized the potential of small group activities/fellowship/study.
Acts 2:42 makes mention of the importance of knowing and having personal relationships with people in your faith. People to lean on when times are tough … people to confide in when a particular sin is getting the better of you … people who will lift you up in prayer every day.
I understand that most smaller churches have that “everybody knows everybody” atmosphere … but don’t let that become the goal at the expense of expansion. Connecting people with people is key to growth, both personally and as a church. I’m not saying that you HAVE to have a small group ministry, but it’s definitely something to consider. And if you are a growing church, I don’t think it’s even avoidable. Connections in fellowship and Bible study are necessary … no two ways about it.
I’m looking forward to meeting my new group-mates in the coming weeks and experiencing the kind of personal relationships with other NewSpringers.
What does your church offer to help fulfill Acts 2:42?

Really enjoyed this post about the church. You said a great deal of truth. Looking at some Christians turns off others to become Christians. We need to look and act like our Lord as we are the only Bible some people will ever read.
Good post, Nathan. I’m a pastor of a currently small church and while it’s true that “everybody knows everybody” it can also be deceiving. Knowing everyone’s name doesn’t necessarily equate to unity and fellowship.
In some ways it can be easier to fit in in a large church because large churches are often more intentional about building relationships and providing multiple “receptacles” to plug into.
