Blog Action Day: Cherish Our Environment

Typically, I try to avoid viral stuff on the net. It’s the ultimate of bandwagons … it comes and then it goes … like digg traffic :-)
But when I saw a few things pop up in my reader referencing blog action day, I thought it a worthy enough cause to participate in, and so here goes.

As many of you might know, I’m not for federal regulations on anything really :-) But that doesn’t mean I can’t encourage some personal responsibility when it comes to our one and only earth. You see, like it or not, you do have an effect on your surroundings. Don’t take a shower and you’ll stink. Don’t change your car’s oil and you’ll have engine damage. Don’t be responsible for your own contribution of pollution into the environment, and there will be a price to pay.

Now, as you may know, I’m skeptical of (although not necessarily opposed to) the idea of Global Warming. Carbon emissions aside, the things we do are bigger than just CO2. If you throw trash out your car window, it makes the side of the road look ugly. If you dump hazardous waste into the ocean or lakes, it kills things and could be potentially dangerous to humans. When cities become so congested that you can see a haze across the skyline, the air stinks and everybody knows it.

Pollution is bad folks. That might sound simplistic, but it’s true.

Recycle if you can, and buy recycled goods. Turn off excess lights. Walk when possible. Not only will you save yourself some cash, but you’re doing future generations a favor too.

Environmentalism doesn’t have to be about weird people protesting in front of the white house. It can be as simple as wanting to leave a better place for you children than your parents left for you. Give it a try. It’s a good thing … I promise :-)
If you care about the environment (or conservation, as I do), then why not take a minute and encourage the readers of your blog to be mindful of their impact as well. If we all to a little, it may actually make a big impact.

The libertarian, anti-global warming, politically interested individual strikes out against pollution. Very interesting. ;)
As a side note, can I ask you a random blogging question? I’ve noticed that all the good blogs (ok, with the exception of Strobist.com) are wordpress… Needless to say I am feeling the inevitable tug and getting bored with the look of blogspot - but one question: I have a lot of blogs on blogspot, and is it infeasible to try and transfer them or is there some quick way?

I think Wordpress has an import wizard for blogspot. Is that right, Nathan?

That’s correct, Ben. WP has an importer for just about every platform you can imagine. It imports all posts and comments.

Good stuff!

I was really affected by your simplicity way of stating that we need to recognize our own efforts in fighting global warming and creating a better environment for the future.

I am working with a coalition to make sure Congress sends the president a strong energy bill with meaningful changes for our environment and planet. This legislation would be a monumental step toward stopping global warming. Go to http://www.energybill2007.org to learn more about what you can do and sign the petition. This is our chance for real progress, don’t let Congress back down!
