Some Mid-Week Personal Stuff
OK, for an uncharacteristic mid-week personal post, I have some cool stuff to share.
First of all, I am committed to getting a political blog out by the end of the year. I have plans to look into getting a logo designed for the site, and possibly even having someone design the site grid/mockup as well (because I suck at design). I’m really hoping I can convince people to contribute for the love of writing with no cash involved (at least at first).
Secondly, if you follow my other blog, you might notice that the theme in use here at this blog is now a free release to the public. So, if you see sites using my design, stop by and let them know you know me! ![]()
OK, I have kind of a big decision to make. Not because it’s life changing, but because it involves money. I’ve wanted an iPod for a while now (I used to have a 3G iPod, but sold it), but I really want to look into podcasting (there may be a future in podcasting for yours truly) and do some research into how others do it (and do it well). In order to do this, I need a portable media player … and like it or not, the iPod is THE ONLY portable player to be considered.
BUT, I have a choice … iPod Touch or the new iPod Classic. I AM going to get an iPod Touch eventually, but I want to wait until the next generation. I also think the Touch is more of a video device than an audio player. The Classic is better for audio, I believe. The thing is, the Touch is $399. I just can’t afford that at the moment. The Classic is a much more reasonable $199. I also need a new camera (to finally replace my stolen one). So, I think I’m going to hold off on the Touch for a few months (while I save up) and go with the other ![]()
Finally, I am offering a basic blog design package (WordPress) for FREE over at the ProBlogger Anniversary giveaway. This is a $599 value, so if you need your blog redesigned, you’ll want to head over to this page and check out how to enter.
HomeGroup is tonight! Woo-Hoo!!!
The MAC is BACK!!! After almost 2 months of booting Windows XP on my Mac so I could work (so I could connect to the net through my cell phone tether), I finally have a permanent internet connection at my house. That means that I finally am able to boot OSX on my Mac (go figure!) and use my wireless router to connect to the net! Ahh, the freedom! I feel much better finally being back under my beautiful Mac OS.
In a related note, satellite internet should not be allowed to be called “high speed”. It’s faster than dial-up, but it’s not quite what I thought it would be. I can’t wait to get back to a cable modem!
OK, that’s it for now. I’m working on getting a good post ready for tomorrow. No promises, but check back and we’ll see

Before putting that political blog out, remember to ask me about “The Church of America and Manifest Destiny.”
If your going to discuss politics in light of Christian living, I think the best way to do that is to think of it in terms of personal and national vocation and destiny, rather than just arguing back and forth over particulars.
Let me give you an example. In the Bible’s eschatology (correctly interpreted of course) Israel has a national vocation and destiny. Paul said that the salvation of Israel would be the salvation of us all.
Rom. 11:11Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring!
If Israel has a personal national or ethnic destiny, do all nations have personal ethnic destinies as well, whether they acheive them or not, or can all ethnicities acheive their destinies? (I can show instantly that they all do, but let’s not make this post a bible study).
Does America have a specific destiny in God’s plan? Do you have a specific destiny in God’s plan, which is not only spiritual in nature, but more geopolitical than most of us really admit.
But then again, what do I know?
Hmm, the satellite I could get in my area is about equivalent to the DSL I used to have, 768kbits, which isn’t so bad for browsing. For downloading big files it can become tortuous, however. Fortunately I now have 6mbit cable
I used to be a Dish Network dealer, after I worked for the cable company here. The expense of putting in satellite internet was so prohibitive at that time ($700) no one ever ordered one from me, though I installed thousands of satellite dishes for TV. I also installed thousands of cable homes as well.
BTW, I have a neighbor that was giving me cable promotions and rolling them over whenever they expired, but this last time one expired recently, the cable bill just for high speed and cable TV came to $160. Outrageous. I called the cable co and asked to speak to retention. They realized I was serious about canceling the whole thing unless they got my bill under $100. I now have basic cable, the golf channel series (history channel, science channel, discovery, military, etc), one or two movie channels, music, high speed internet, and just one digital box with HD service, for $88 a month now. Tell me they are not ripping people off when I can make a simple phone call and get my bill cut in half and lose not much (I lost the DVR, a small sacrifice, and one movie channel, and that’s about it, I had to turn in one box, they are charging $10 a month just for boxes now, but my teen didn;t really care, he’s more into computer games than TV)
My advice, if you are having high cable bill problems, do what I did and see if you can get them to keep rolling you ionto promotions and cutting your bill for retention.
Oh, and don’t think you’ll have such luck with the satellite co. They are the proverbial immovable object.
Sonny,
Wow, $700 for an install. Now it is free with a 1-2 year contract. I have cable now, but its basic with only one cable box. I’ve turned my computer into a DVR, but I’m really missing have the DVR on the TV. I’m ready to go back to Satellite. At least with Cable I didn’t have to commit to a contract.
Not only is satellite Internet not high speed, it also limits the amount of bandwidth you can use. I get penalized with slower speeds all the time and it’s not like I’m downloading movies or something! I wish I could get something other than the satellite isp.
