Bullet Points - State of the Blog
On October 12, 2006 I wrote my first post for this blog. At the time, it wasn’t even hosted at this domain, nathanrice.org. But over the past year, I’ve had a blast writing here, and I just wanted to give everyone a quick peek at what I’m seeing for the next 12 months of this blog’s existence.
STATS
The blog is averaging around 500 visitors per day, with another 100 who have subscribed to the RSS feed.
Some of those visitors are robots being registered as visitors.
Most of those visitors are coming from Google and very rarely stick around. Unfortunately, the search terms and the target audience do not match up. Most people wanting to find out about Intelligent Design don’t want to read a daily blog. People looking for Christian topics find this blog a little too far to the “left” for their liking. Regardless, I need a way to convert new users into daily readers.
About 60 of you (those who actually visit the site, as opposed to reading the feed) come pretty much daily.
NUMBERS
There have been 232 posts (not including this one) and 1,568 comments. Not too bad.
Akismet has blocked 17,902 spam comments.
I’d post the most commented posts, but unfortunately the numbers are bloated due to our recent threadjacking problems.
READERS WITH WEBSITES
I like to share link love with people, so for those of you who have blogs and also read and comment on this blog, here is some link love for ya! If I miss anyone, let me know and I’ll update the post.

THE FUTURE
So, since I’ve gone back to working full time at home, I’ve had the time to write here a bit more … although I have lacked for ideas. So with this new time, I’ve been trying to think of ways to update this blog more often, but without having to write long commentaries or editorials.
The solution, I think, is to use asides, or what I will call sidenotes, as well as twittering.
This will give me the opportunity to write shorter, more concise posts. Sometimes I have these thoughts throughout the day that don’t necessarily justify a long post. They may even only be a quick one or two sentence thought.
So in order to facilitate this, the blog will need a redesign. I already have the structure nailed down pretty well, but it may take me a while to figure out how to color it and make it pretty. If you can help in that respect, I’d certainly appreciate it! Here’s a sketch I did of the “wireframe” for the new design. It may not help any, but I can see it in my mind.
So that’s the state of the blog. It hasn’t been a raging success, but it has been fun! I’m not nearly as obsessed with my stats or growing as I used to be. I’ve realized that the potential for growth is limited in this niche, especially considering the fact that my niche is much smaller than most. I’m really hoping to turn this blog into more of a personal webspace … I’ll still be writing editorial style posts, but just not quite as often. Who knows, maybe that’ll work and the blog will grow more now?
Anyway, many of you have been readers for a while now … some since the very beginning. For you, I am appreciative.
For fun, in the comments today, let us know how you found this blog? What brought you here? How did we meet?
Thanks guys and gals! Have a great weekend!!!

Hey Nathan!
I found your blog through Cory Miller @ http://www.churchcommunicationpro.com.
I enjoy reading what you’re thinking, though you are a little bit to the left and kind of getting soft with this whole “cute puppy” thing.

Nevertheless, I find you mentally stimulating and quite frankly agree with most of what you say, with the exception of the whole “Let’s get the Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving” thing.
Thanks for blogging and keeping it real!
Paul
Paul,
Cory definitely helped me out a bit with link love in the beginning. Who knew we’d be partners almost a year later?
I wonder what we differ on? Probably the science stuff. And yes, I’ve gotten a little soft … but keep in mind that he’s a pit bull, so I’ll toughen up
just to make it more fun!
I was talking to Meredith the other day and I told her that I wanted to make the entire months of November and December “Christmas time”. I even said we could celebrate Hannukah too
Lunch is a go, bro! Name the time and place, and I’ll be there. Shoot me an email when you know something!
Nathan
Sweet update… I’ve been a bit curious as to why the content had thinned out a little lately, but try visit pretty frequently still. I understand what it is like to have a string of incredibly interesting topics/questions to discuss all in a row, then have a dry spell.
Thanks for the link:) And of course you know how I found your site - the good ole IDURK group.
I’m racking my brain trying to remember how I came across you here. I can’t remember now. You may have commented on my blog, but I don’t know how you would have found it back then. I probably found it through some Wordpress linking or something like that.
Looking forward to the new format. I’ve been pondering something like this myself so I’m curious to see what you come up with.
BTW - thanks for the linkage, man!
Nathan–thanks so much for the link! I always know my thinking will be challenged or new thoughts given a jumpstart.
I’m not sure if I found you through Paul or through just hopping around the blogosphere but hope to meet someday. BTW–I love the puppy talk!
The whole Christmas tree timing thing though–I’m not sure about… I do love gathering with my guys, turning up the Christmas music and decorating together. That will always be special.
Thanks for all your great thoughts and I look forward to more!!
I actually found your blog because I was looking for a site that talked about Christianity as it relates to science and politics. I kept visiting because I enjoyed watching your views on church evolve, and I could relate since I went through a similar experience. I like that you lean to the Left, because there are a billion other Christian blogs that have the opposing view well covered. Anyway, I really appreciate you linking to my blog - that’s really cool of you!
Hey Nathan! I stumbled across your blog after reading your mother’s blog. I’ve only read yours maybe twice, but was amazed at what a sharp young man you’ve become and I love it that you use your “words”. So many kids your age don’t. Just keep your focus on the truth and not just knowledge and you’ll be okay. You are blessed with a loving mom and dad and a super (and gorgeous) girlfriend!! You are rich beyond measure in my book!
Enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with your folks. We’re headed to WV, too, to see the in-laws (oh joy), but hope to have time to stop by and see your folks on the way back home, so maybe we’ll get to see you, too. If you ever need anything here in SC, you know you can always call. Your mama’s got our phone numbers. Hugs to you and Meredith!
Nathan,
I found your blog through your Elegant Blue theme, which I use on my website at http://www.jakebouma.com. I’m not sure if you’ve been by my site (I think you have), but I’ve been using “Asides” (I call them “digressions”) for a while now, for exactly the reasons you list. I love using them… they are very handy.
Although I haven’t commented before now, I read via RSS in Google Reader. Good luck with the redesign… Looking forward to seeing what you cook up!
