Bullet Points on Monday
It’s been a while since I’ve published a good list of bullet points weekly update. Things have been busy with traveling, working on projects, and keeping up with the dog. But, assuming my schedule keeps, I should have the new design live shortly, and I’m pretty sure that you guys are going to like it. I can honestly say that the regular readers/commenters on this blog have become my friends, and the new design will reflect that :-)
Anyway, here is what’s running through my head for the last couple of weeks.
- I had a GREAT Thanksgiving holiday trip! Honestly, it went better than I could have ever expected!
- Probably one of the best messages Perry’s ever preached occurred on Sunday. Seriously, you have to watch the video once it’s uploaded Tuesday.
- Rocky is a whopping 15 lbs. now. He’s nearly tripled his weight since I got him a little over a month ago. Amazing.
- Speaking of, we headed to a puppy kindergarten class last Friday night. Picture this, a Pit Bull and two shih-tzu’s. Thankfully, we’re switching classes so Rocky can play with puppies more his size.
- Christmas is in full season now, so I don’t have to feel guilty about having my tree up anymore.
- OK, let me give a word of warning to anyone out there who has considered Satellite internet … don’t. Seriously, 1) it will cost you at least $50 per month, 2) it will cost you a bunch of money up front, 3) it will take forever to get it installed, 4) it will not work when it’s cloudy, and 5) it’s slow … really slow.
- Yes, you read that last one right. Sure they claim to be “high speed”, but there’s a little secret. Watch a lot of youtube videos? Transfer a lot of files between your home and a remote server? Then expect to have your speed capped. If you exceed some arbitrary transfer limit, they will cap your speed at some excruciatingly low rate. A 5 minute youtube video takes 10 minutes to load.
- So … after reading Tony’s post here, I decided to give it a shot. I called up AT&T and sure enough, Naked DSL is available in my area. So, the modem arrives this Thursday. I’ll let you know how it goes.
- Maybe those last three bullets deserved their own post? :-)
- I absolutely LOVE spending time with Meredith. I spent the better part of the weekend with her and I had a blast!
- Had dinner with friends on Friday night. It was great! Their dog (male) decided that since we brought Rocky, he’d go ahead and mark his territory. Unfortunately, “his territory” amounted to the furniture. His daddy wasn’t happy :-)
- OK, I gotta get to work. I’m so behind!!!

Reading that post about DSL linked, I thought “that’s weird, my new 6meg cable is infinitely faster and more reliable than my old DSL”. I believe I live at the edge of my local DSL service range, though, so that probably has something to do with it- distance isn’t supposed to matter with cable service. At least I have speedy strong nets again, hopefully you will too man.
Good luck with your new ISP. I am looking forward to the new design!
Are you getting your dog a Christmas present? This is my first year as a dog owner too, and I have had at least two people express shock that I do not have a stocking hung for my dog. Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?
Eugh… I suffered through satellite Internet for over two years. We got radio this summer, which was a tremendous improvement.
@Trent
DSL is up and running now, and I feel like I just removed a cancer or something. The speed difference is unreal.
I can honestly say that I would NEVER recommend satellite internet to anyone looking for high speed.
Well, sometimes it was better than AOL dial-up, but it was just too expensive. With radio Internet, we’re getting triple speeds and a hugely increased download cap for $10/month less than satellite.
I can’t get cable or DSL because I live ten minutes away from town.
I meant to say, the average speed of our radio Internet easily triples the peak speed of our satellite Internet. The biggest advantage is the new connection doesn’t crap out six hours of the day.
@Trent
Boy do I ever know what you’re talking about there. I simply could not afford to go entire days without internet access.
By the way, what is “radio” access. I’ve never heard of it before.
Nate- this is my ISP: http://www.storm.ca/
Maybe I should have said “wireless”. Recently we’ve had a little trouble with it, but that might be due to that the receiver dish is on our roof and El Nino is giving us a very Canadian winter. It hasn’t been a big enough deal to call Storm’s tech support number, which remotely fixed our signal once before.
